いつぞやの『The British Invasion The History Of British Rock, Vol.5』(1991)に続く、Rhino Recordsによるブリティッシュ・ビートがこれでもかと詰め込まれた編集盤シリーズの第8弾、『The British Invasion The History Of British Rock, Vol.8』のご案内です。
結局、中途半端なことに先の第5弾と本盤だけしか手に入れていないのです。
ブリティッシュ・ビートと言いましても、世はフラワーでサイケデリックな潮流に湧き上がりサマー・オヴ・ラヴを謳歌するという時節柄です。
時代設定はそんな1960年代のイギリス、本盤も例外なくというよりも正攻法でど真ん中を狙った絶好のオムニバスですよ。
未発表曲が収録されている訳でもなく極めて定番中の定番曲ばかりです。
従いまいして、当たり前と言えば当たり前の話なのですけれど、ハズレが1曲たりとも存在しない聴きどころのみの充実盤なのです、実際に。
本当ならば何も書きようがないくらいなのですけれど。
いつ聴いてもその躍動感に心を鷲掴みにされるM1｢I'm A Man｣The Spencer Davis Groupは出だしが微妙に短いヴァージョンが収録されています。
Cat Stevensが歌うM6｢Matthew And Son｣のサビはとうとう“牧野さん”としか聞こえなくなってしまいました。
次いで、妖しいサイケデリアが放たれたM7｢Hurdy Gurdy Man｣でもDonovanの才能はひと際瞬いていますよ。
M10｢Desdemona｣で爬虫類的なバック・コーラスを響かせているのは当時、このJohn's Childrenに在籍中のMarc Bolan。
人に歴史ありですね。
今回、本盤を改めて聴いてみまして最大の収穫はM12｢Conquistador｣でした。
その雄大で壮麗、そして厳粛な演奏には見事に持って行かれました。
ありがちなことにProcol Harumについてはお馴染みのM9｢A Whiter Shade Of Pale｣、一辺倒で満足していましたので思わず目から鱗がどっさりと剥がれ落ちましたね。
こちらもまた、購入した当時は当然の如く初めて耳にするものばかりでして。
抜群過ぎるその選曲にはほだされっ放しです。
