日本発の好企画編集盤、『EMI Mods Collection』(1996)のご案内です。
1960年代中頃のイギリス、サイケデリアが芽吹く直前のクラブ・バンドの音源をEMIとその系列レーベルから掬い取ったオムニバス盤CDです。
発売当時、未CD化ゆえに聴きたくても聴くことが叶わなかった音源を多数収録したその内容はと言いますと。
どこから切っても何から摘んでも、真っ黒です。
当然のようにR&Bやブルースの古典が数多くカヴァーされている訳ですけれども、有象無象の若者たちが未来に夢を馳せながらも薄暗い地下でもがいている姿をも見て取ることが出来ますよ。
モッズ、ですね。
有名どころのManfred Mann 、さすがです。
単なる人気グループかと思いきや、それこそ単なる勘違い。ブレイン・ドレインよろしく、演奏能力の高さは伊達ではありません。
やはり只者ではありませんね。
大御所のLong John Baldryもやはり、さすがですね。
貫禄が違いますよ。男臭さ満点です。
貫禄と言えば、The Zoot Money Big Roll Bandです。
購入当時、ずっと聴いてみたかったグループのひとつでした。
Marvin Gayeのカヴァー、M3｢Stubborn Kind Of Fellow｣がこれまた男前ですね。
演奏にいちばんまとまりがありますし、波打つグルーヴ感にこちらは思わず腰砕けです。
続きまして、Herbie Goins & The Night-TimersのM4｢No.One In Your Heart｣も忘れてはなりません。
灰汁の強さはほかの連中にひけを取らないばかりか雄大ささえ醸し出すという懐の深さが窺えるという訳の判らない魅力を備えています。
まったくいなせですね。好きな1曲です。
身軽なポップさをも身につけていたのがThe Shotgun Expressですね。
思わず繰り返し聴いてしまうM6｢I Could Feel The Whole World Turning Around｣には心底、参っています。
The Jeff Beck Groupに参戦する直前のRod Stewartも加わっていました、などということと無関係に華麗なストリングスが宙を舞い心くすぐられてしまいますよ。
ほかの顔触れも凄まじく、Peter BardensはCamelへPeter GreenとMick Fleetwoodは勿論、Fleetwood Mac へと出世して行く訳ですよ。
黒光りした並みいる強豪の中にありまして、妙に目を惹いたのがThe Bo Street Runnersなのです。
M11｢Tell Me What You're Gonna Do｣、M12｢And I Do Just What I Want｣の2曲ともJames Brownの小気味良いカヴァーなのですけれど、若さ溢れる引き締まった音を鳴らしてくれていますよ。
とても頼もしいグループですね。
