Yo La Tengoの企画盤、『Yo La Tengo Is Murdering The Classics』ですよ、と。
運営難に陥ったWFMUというラジオ局を救うべくリクエスト大会を開催、内容はカヴァー曲ばかりというその生演奏の数々をまとめた代物です。
意表を突かれるどころかあり得ない選曲ですよね。解釈としては勿論、Yo La Tengo流に料理してあるにせよファンキーなR&Bからパンク、ガール・ポップにプログレッシヴ・ロックと多岐に渡るこの有りさまは甚だしいこと極まりません。
さらりと尺を短くぶつ切りに。大雑把なところも細やかに凝ったところもありつつ、表題の通りに陵辱の限りを尽くしているではないですか。
M1「Tighten Up」Archie Bell And The DrellsとM22「Roundabout」Yesが同居していたりM9「Ding Dang / Interplanetary Music」The Beach Boys / Sun Raというメドレーなんてどう考えても変態ですよ、どうかしています。
それでも、これもYo La Tengoなんだと言われればどうにか納得することも出来るんですが、この逸脱の仕方には肝を冷やしてしまう訳ですよ、やはり。
思わず嬉しいのがM10「Captain Lou」NRBQですね。アメリカ随一のバー・バンドを楽しくカヴァー。最高です。
そして、先祖帰りとも言えるM11「Oh! Sweet Nuthin'」The Velvet UndergroundとM13「Roadrunner」The Modern Loversなどのある意味で直球なカヴァーは本当に興味深いところですね。
もし仮にJimi Hendrixなんかにも挑戦してもらえますとさらに面白いことになりそうです。
無茶なリクエストを振るにしてもそれに応えるにしても真剣にふざけているのが支離滅裂ながら微笑ましいです。
